Proper Maintenance of Hair Straightening Brushes

Using a hair straightening brush is one of the easiest ways to obtaining smooth hair quickly, especially when you are in a rush and have no time for a flat iron. Nonetheless, hair straighteners are expensive, which means you will need to take some steps to make sure your brush stays effective for a long time to come.

Why brushes need cleaning

Just like regular brushes, hair straighteners can turn into gunk traps; this gunk usually consists of dust, hair strands, styling products, even dandruff and dust mites. Do you agree this is quite disgusting? If yes, avoid damaging your straightener and your hair, and clean all of your combs and brushes regularly.

The styling products residue on your straightening brush can cause your hair to look dull or as if it were burnt. In fact, it can cause the heat of the brush to actually damage your hair; you can recognize this type of residue by the thick buildup on the brush plates.

How to clean your hair brush

Before attempting to clean any hair straightening brush, remember to turn it off first and unplug it from the socket. Wait until the brush cools down, so that the plates are only slightly warm.

Take a towel or cloth, and dampen it with warm water. Then, use it to gently rub the plates; repeat until there is no residue left on them. You can also use a tooth brush to achieve the same results, but only as long as it is soft. Hard tools can scratch the plates, which in turn can damage your hair.

However, if the plates are too dirty for plain water to be effective on them, you will need to use something stronger. For example, try mixing some baking soda with peroxide until they turn into a paste. Let it sit for up to 20 minutes, then wipe it on the plates.

Alternatively, you can use a spray cleaner that was designed specifically for hot tools. Spray the cleaner evenly over the plates, then wipe them with a clean towel.

Important to remember

Whichever method you choose, make sure your hair straightening brush is completely dry before you use it again.

When the brush has dried, plug it in and wait for a few minutes until it heats up; during this time, it will burn off any cleaning products residue before it touches your hair.
